How to Calculate Test Score

Calculating test scores is a common problem that students, teachers, and online learners all face, but if you know the right way , it’s a matter of seconds. Whether it’s a school exam, a university quiz, or an online test for a job interview, knowing the correct calculation will help you understand your results and improve your performance.

First, find out how many questions you answered correctly.

Formula 1:

Percentage = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

Formula 2 (Alternate):

Percentage = ((Total Questions − Incorrect Answers) ÷ Total Questions) × 100

Both of these formulas give you the same result, so use the one that’s easiest for you.

Remember:

Correct Answers + Wrong Answers = Total Questions

If only the wrong answers are known, subtract them from the total questions to get the correct answers.

Grading Scale (US Example):

A+ = 97% – 100%

A = 93% – 96%

A- = 90% – 92%

B+ = 87% – 89%

B = 83% – 86%

B- = 80% – 82%

C+ = 77% – 79%

C = 73% – 76%

C- = 70% – 72%
D+ = 67% – 69%

D = 63% – 66%

D- = 60% – 62%

F = Less than 60%

Note: Different educational institutions may set the passing marks at 50%, 60% or even 65%, so always confirm with your teacher or institute.

Example:
Total Questions = 110
Wrong Answers = 21
Correct Answers = 110 − 21 = 89

Percentage = (89 ÷ 110) × 100 = 80%

According to this grading scale, the letter grade is B-.

Special tip: If there are 100 questions on a test, each correct answer is worth 1%. For example, if you answered 85 correctly, your score would be a straight 85%, no calculator needed.

Percentage Calculator

Use this tab to quickly convert numbers into percentages and answer common tasks like What is X% of Y, X is what % of Y, Marks → Percentage, Increase/Decrease, and Reverse %. Just choose a mode and enter the two numbers it asks for (e.g., part & total, X & Y) to get an instant, step-by-step result you can trust.

What is X% of Y?

Find marks when you know the percentage and total marks.
Formula: Marks = (X / 100) × Y
Example: What is 75% of 80? → (75/100) × 80 = 60 marks.

X is what % of Y? (Score → Percentage)

Convert a score to percentage.
Formula: Percentage = (X / Y) × 100
Example: 68 out of 85(68/85) × 100 = 80% (approx).

Percent Increase / Decrease (Curve/Penalty)

Grade curve (+) or penalty (–) as a percentage change.
Formula: Change % = ((New − Old) / Old) × 100
Example (curve): From 70 to 77((77−70)/70)×100 = 10% increase.
Example (penalty): From 80 to 72((72−80)/80)×100 = −10% decrease.

Reverse Percentage Calculator

Find the original total before a percentage was applied.
Formula (given final and %): Original = Final ÷ (1 ± r) where r = %/100 (use + for increase, for discount/penalty).
Example (after 10% bonus final = 88): Original = 88 ÷ 1.10 = 80.
Example (after 15% penalty final = 68): Original = 68 ÷ 0.85 = 80 (approx).
